Gel nails that are worth it

I’m recently married (did I mention that yet?!) and as part of my bridal prep I had a Shellac French pedicure. I normally don’t bother with pedi’s but I had some cute shoes to show off (even if they were hidden under my enormous dress for 95% of the time!) and I wanted the professional pics of my shoes to look great.

I’m relatively new to gel manicures and have had less than a handful, but each time I’ve been amazed by the nails I leave the salon with with; touch/scratch/handbag dry, glossy, strong, and chip free until they’re soaked off.

Most Salon’s guarantee a gel manicure for two weeks with claims that they can last up to three. This is all great, but, and it’s a big but; I’ve found that after a week the re-growth looks awful and by 10 days I want it off, PRONTO!

These super long lasting manicures cost a fair bit (around £30) and I pay this thinking it’s an investment, but when you’re removing the job 10 days in the price begins to sting a bit (well, okay, a bit more).

Now that I’ve had a French pedicure I’ve fallen in love with gel polish completely. It seems that pedicures take full advantage of the product offering. Toe nails grow slower, so re-growth is not so bad, and, with the main area of the nail being a clear colour, re-growth is less noticeable anyway.

Here’s a pic of my pedicure 3 weeks in (3 days before I cut my nails).

I proclaimed in excitement to my husband (I love writing that!) that from now on I will be having regular French gel pedicures. His reply? “I’ve never really understood that whole French polish thing, it makes people look like they forget to cut their nails”.
Well, I’ve always thought a French polish on the feet looks rather chic, and HE sometimes wears his work t-shirt on days off. Enough said.

Viva Forever

After reading a magazine article about the upcoming Spice Girls musical, Viva Forever, I’ve been reminiscing over my teenage years. This is surprising to me because 1) my memory is awful and 2) I haven’t paid attention to anything spice since 2001. The most prominent memory is my then best friend and I (aged around 12) taking HOURS to record our own version of ‘2 become 1’ – that is one cassette I’d love to find (listen to and then burn).

Another memory is putting on a spice show with my church youth group. My Nan was the church secretary and the group consisted of me, my cousin and two others. We dressed up in true spice fashion and despite having ‘baby’ written all over my face I was ‘posh’ (perhaps something to do with the designer handbags I’d come to love later in life). We performed ‘Wannabe’ to our audience of church goers ranging from 70-80 years old. Looking back, the lyrics ‘If you wanna be my lover’ may have been slightly inappropriate for both performers and audience, but with the spirit of spice, anything goes.

I’ve just downloaded their greatest hits and am enjoying the songs perhaps even more this time round. The quality of singing remains questionable, but then that’s just not what those girls were about.

The Musical, which tells the story of a group of friends who enter a televised talent show, starts showing December at the Piccadilly Theatre, London, and features all the songs we know and love. It’s written by Absolutely Fabulous star Jennifer Saunders (who IS absolutely fabulous!) and produced by Judy Craymer, who brought us Mamma Mia!

I’ve a list of shows I haven’t got round to seeing yet (some of which have ended!) and doubt I’ll get round to watching it. If you do go, let me know what you think.

A thought for today; SPICE up your life!

A little about Belle…

I’m a Craft loving, novel devouring, shopping obsessed newly wed in need of a new project!

Originally from Dorset, I’ve lived in leafy North London for nearly 10 years and have worked in the west end for eight. I love home life but never seem to get enough of it. I sometimes dream of living in a remote cottage in the Country with hours to potter about baking and crafting, but the reality is, I’d go potty with no decent shops close by and the heavenly silence would soon become deafening. So, I strive to combine ‘the dream’ with urban bliss (and that thing called ‘work’ that pays the bills). I may have to leave the cosy cottage behind though (husband would hate living in a cottage anyway).

My blog will keep you up to date with my crafts, book reviews, beauty loves and anything else I think’s worth sharing.
